[太阳] "Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. And I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it! "

I still remember that a friend asked me if Little Women is a novel about feminism or female consciousness when I was reading this book, and I told her that I don't think Little Women had reached the feminism level, it only can be said a book of female consciousness. "Feminism is a collection of movements aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women. Female consciousness, recognition of what a particular class, culture, and historical period expect from women, creates a sense of rights and obligations that provides motive force for actions different from those Marxist or feminist theory generally try to explain." All March sisters except dear Beth get married in the second half, including the most boyish Jo. Marriage and family are the end of every girl? I can't agree this purpose behind those plots. I would rather Jo's ending is an old maid as she said: "An old maid – that’s what I’m to be. A literary spinster, with a pen for a spouse, a family of stories for children, and twenty years hence a morsel of fame, perhaps…" And I would like to believe it was Louisa May Alcott changed her story for getting higher remuneration as shown in Greta Celeste Gerwig's movie. Actually I didn't love it as much as I read it when I was a little girl. Feeling a little disappointed this time. But I have to say, the ambience of March's family, the way Mrs. March to educate her daughters really impressed me. I've learned how to be a girl mixed of kindness, sweet and strong. Besides, as a classic of American literature, I believe it has it's own beauty, such as Jo's gift in writing - an evidence that women can make living just as men, Meg's growth - from being fascinated to fine things to being satisfied with what she already has, Amy's self awareness - her change is so quickly that I don't know how to say. So I have a guess, the reason why the first half is amazing while second half is regretful is that Louisa May Alcott writted the former based on her real life and the later based on imagination and logical reasoning.

Be elegant or die. Money couldn't keep shame and sorrow out of rich people's house.  There is always light behind the clouds.  Love is a great beautifier.  It takes people a long time to learn the difference between talent and genius, especially ambitious young men and women.  Wealth is certainly a most desirable thing, but poverty has its sunny side.  People want to be amused, not preached at.  Talent isn't genius.
